The Pennsylvania Office of the State Treasurer serves as the custodian of more than $100 billion in Commonwealth funds, and is responsible for the receipt and deposit of state monies, investment management and oversight of all withdrawals and deposits from state agencies. New York State has over $13 billion in lost money. Every day we return $1 million to those who file a claim. Lost or unclaimed money gets turned over by organizations required to report dormant accounts to the New York State Office of the State Comptroller. On July 1, 2000, the State Treasurer assumed responsibility for the state’s Unclaimed Property Program. Every state has an unclaimed property program. The purpose of these programs is to return unclaimed property to rightful owners. Unclaimed property includes everything from jewelry, stock certificates, coin collections and cash. Somehow, money gets lost. We leave cash in odd places. Given how hard we work for money, it’s hard to believe how easily we misplace it.
Unclaimed property refers to accounts held by financial institutions and other businesses who have lost contact with their owner of record. Unclaimed property includes, but is not limited to: wages, savings accounts, customer refunds, accounts payable, insurance payments, shares of stock, escrow funds, royalties and contents from safe deposit boxes. Most property is reported to the program after five years of inactivity.
